REPORT ON RUAPEHU

LAVA FLOW NOT DANGEROUS WELLINGTON, Sept. 3

"Such stories as a huge rock being hurled some miles from the mountain and being clearly vis.ble from remote localities can be discredited." said Mr 11. Fyfe, field geologist on the staff of the Geological Survey, in a report on the eruption of Riiapehu, given to a conference of geological experts in Wellington last week. Mr Fyfe recently spent three weeks at the mountain.

"A lava flow is not to be drpaded, foi the largest flow of fairly recent, though prehistoric, origin in the Tongariro-Rua pchu zone, extends only a mile and a half from its source." The fine ash from Ruapohu would travel for considerable distances in the upper atmosphere, and was not only to appear at remote localities in New Zealand, but before long would probably be reported from South America or. at least, colourful sunsets might be experienced •there that could be attributed to it.
