Mrs A. E. Clausen is visiting her sister-in-law, Mrs A. Bircliall, oi Marton.

In the Wellington Competitions Society’s festival, Margaret Feascy and Pauline Murray (Palmerston North) were second in the pianoforte duet, 12 years and under 16. Audrey Maultsaid (Palmerston North) was second in the solo song and dance for girls and boys under nine years.

Madame Alexandra Koliontay, Soviet Ambassador to Sweden, has been relieved of hei duties at her request because of ill-health. The Moscow radio announced that the Soviet has appointed Ilia Cliernychev to the post at Stockholm. Madame Koliontay, who is 73, was the first woman in the world to become a diplomatist and accredited Minister to a foreign Power. She has been described as the ‘'Madame Pompadour of the Russian Revolution.” In 1917 she was secretary to Lenin. Mrs Mary Frances Douglas, a resident of Hawera for many years, who died recently, was a sister of Mr W. P. Russell, of Palmerston North, the well-known racing judge and liandicapper. A daughter of Mr and Mrs John Russell, who were pioneers in the Wanganui district, she was married to Mr William Middlemass Douglas, who predeceased her nine years ago. Mrs Douglas, who is survived by two daughters and two sons, frequently acted as judge cookery entries at various shows in Taranaki.
