ANOTHER COAL SUBSIDY

MINERS AGAIN BENEFIT. (Press Assn.) WESTPORT, Aug. 23. The Mining Controller (Mr 0. H. Benney) stated today that he liad been advised by the Acting-Minister of Mines (Mr O’Brien) that the Government had decided to meet the extra cost arising out of the recent increases of 7id in the hewing rates and Is 6d per shift to these workers by means of a subsidy. The increased rates of pay approved by the Government in respect of the State coal mines and authorised by the Coal Mines Council for pri-vately-owned mines followed the pronouncement by the Arbitration' Court concerning wages generally and are retrospective to May 7 last. Mr Benney said that the subsidy would be computed oil a tonnage basis to compensate for the actual increased cost and that a circular setting out the procedure would be issued shortly by the Mines Department,
