ASH FROM RUAPEHU
Mount Rim pel ni was less active yesterday, accordi lire to a report received at the Geological Survey in Wellington from the field geologists. Jn Wanganui, yesterday, more dust fell on the city from Ruapehu, says a Palmerston North resident who has returned from the River City. Cars proceeding along the streets stirred it up, while as much ns a bucketful could he’swept up off the average concrete path. The fine dust even penetrated the houses, and persons sensitive to hay fever complaints found the breathino- in of the fine dust objectionable. Along the loads outside Wanganui the paddocks were white; in fact, one farmer remarked that the ash 'looked like a top T drcssing of about 3cwt. of lime to the acre. Fine grey volcanic ash from Ruapehu fell in the upper part of the Hutt Valley yesterday. When the moon rose early .last evening it appeared as a particularly large disc, and of a deep golden hue. The shadows on its face did not stand out very clearly, and until it rose fairly well in the sky it had a distinct glow around it. It is believed that the moon’s changed appearance was clue to its being viewed through the dust-laden atmosphere. Later in the evening it appeared normal again.
