SECONDARY EDUCATION

The Board of Governors of the Palmerston North High Schools met under the chairmanship of Mr M. 11. Oram, M.P. It was decided to -apply to the Education Department for grants to cover the cost of various general improvements at . the Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools. The chairman’s report stated that the ground improvement plan at the Boys’ High School was proceeding satisfactorily. " He was in touch with the department in regard to the new Technical School buildings, but progress was unfortunately slow. Mr J. Ilodgens, M.P., was doing his best to prosecute the proposal for a new hostel for the Girls’ High School. Mr Oram made reference to the fact that Miss Pitt was severing her connection with the board’s work after many years’ service and on his suggestion a sub-com-mittee was set up to arrange a small valedictory function. A mdtter giving the board no small concern was tbe heating facilities at the schools. The supply position undoubtedly accentuated tbe difficulty this year, but apart from this there was ample evidence that the .buildings were not well catered for. As a preliminary step to giving better facilities the board decided to obtain reports and estimates on fuel burners and, if practicable, ways and means will he sought to attach these to the existing boilers and also tq provide more radiators in t,!ic rooms. Mr G. Tremaine and the secretary were asked to prepare these reports. A letter from the High School Old Boys’ Association, asking that old,, hoys from the school be included in the panel of speakers for the breaking-up ceremonies, was read, and the suggestion heartily approved of. From the list of names the association submitted one or two likely speakers were selected for the function this year. •' Miss E. E. Stephens (principal) advised that the silver jubilee of the Girls’ High School falls on September 12 this year, and proposed functions which she considered would suitably recognise this anniversary. The board approved and empowered a sub-committee consisting of Miss Stephens, Miss K. Birnie and Mr 'Tremaine to carry out the programme.
