PRISON ESCAPE PENALTY

WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. The power of the Prisons Board to review sentences was relerred to by the Minister of Justice (Air Mason; in tlio .House of Representatives when replying to a question asked by Mr W. T. Anderton (Lab., Eden) who had drawn attention to the criticism of the Chief Justice in regard to a sentence of two years’ imprisonment imposed by visiting Justices of the Peace on the inmate ot a prison farm for escaping from the institution. The Minister said that the sentence in question was not passed by' visiting Justices under the Prisons Act. They had no power to impose a sentence of imprisonment for prison offences. The case was dealt with, in the Magistrate’s Court by two Justices of the Peace. In the last 12 years the same term as in this ease had very frequently been passed by experienced Judges and Magistrates. Where an escapee settled down and showed ins worthiness the Prisons. Board invariably recommended remission of a substantial portion and sometimes the whole ot the added sentence lor escaping.
