FIFTH VICTORY TEST

(Rec. 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 22. England won the Fifth and final Victory Test by six wickets at Old Trafford, Manchester, today. Cristofani, with a magnificent fighting century, gave Australia a fighting chance of averting defeat, but England’s batsmen, with 150 minutes loft for play, scored the necessary 141 runs comfortably.

Cristofani, Australia’s eighth batsman, treated all the bowlers alike. He hit powerfully all round the wicket. Seven wickets were down for 80 when Cristofani came in. V ith Williams, who batted 90 minutes for 12, Cristofani added 95 for the ninth wicket. The English howler Phillipson, play ing his first match of the series, took six wickets for 58 on a wicket which made the ball kick dangerously. England lost three good wickets for 70, but sound batting gave them the victory. Scores: — Australia. —First innings, 173. Second innings, 210 (Pepper 23, Cristofani, 110 not out; Phillipson, 6 for 58, Pollard 2 for 46; Wright 2 for 44). England.—First innings, 243. Second innings, 141 for 4 wickets (Hutton 29, Robertson 37, Edrich 42 not out; Pepper 2 for IS).

Australia won the first match by six wickets, England the second by 41 runs, Australia the third by four wickets, and the fourth Test was drawn. ’ With the conclusion of the fifth Test each side thus won two matches.

STRONG DOMINIONS TEAM LONDON, Aug. 22.

Hassett is captaining a strong Dominions eleven against England at Lord’s on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. The other Australians are Miller, Pepper, Bremner. Besides Hassett there are three peacetime Tost cricketers, the West Indian Constantine and the New Zealanders C. S. Dempster and M. P. Donnelly. The New Zealand left-hand howler Sub-Lieut. 11. G. Gallagher, who in his last four matches has taken 29 wickets for 25 runs, took eight wickets for 18 playing for the Navy at Lord’s. Ho finished the Army innings by taking three wickets for no runs.,
