GROUNDED AIRCRAFT

JAPANESE SEEK USE.

(Rec. 10.20 a.m.) MANILA, Aug. 22. The Japanese sent a wireless message to General MacArtliur requesting permission to “use the least necessary amount of unarmed aeroplanes needed for various urgent liaison matters.” The message, which added that the planes would carry red pennants, pointed out that General MacArtliur at present prohibits flights by all Service and civilian planes. General MacArfluir’s order that all Japanese planes must bo grounded, as disclosed in Tokio’s request, was necessitated by fanatical air attacks on American ships and reconnaissance planes after the Japanese capitulation. The Tokio radio made a special appeal to kamikaze (suicide) pilots to cease operations. The New York Times points out that the broadcast’ clearly disclosed that kamikaze pilots so far have defied the Emperor.
