REPAIRS TO SCHOOLS

The Wanganui Education Board, at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, consideied a request by the Manawatu-Oroua School Committees’ Association that m cases of urgent repairs being necessary in the interests of health committees should have power to effect such repairs without first notifying the board. The chairman (Air E. F Hemingway; explained that where the health or the pupils was endangered the committees had power to do any necessary work provided the board was notified immediately after. . The architect (Air E. R. Hodge) reported on a suggestion by the Mana-watu-Oroua School Committees’ Association that, to speed up the works at the southern end of the district, a branch organisation be established at Palmerston North. Mr ’Hodge said it was his desire to establish, as a postwar development, a centre-in Palmerston North for the storage of materials and furnishings and to have there a resident works foreman who could use discretion in matters of urgency but otherwise would act on instructions from Wanganui in respect- of major alterations and general repairs.
