LEADERS FOR YOUTH
The Wanganui Education Board yosterdav decided to approach the Government, urging that paid personnel bo engaged for the establishment of youth cpntres which would be devoted to furthering the activities of boys and girls in their leisure time. The subject was brought forward by a letter from the Manawatu and Oroua School Committees' Association, framed after a discussion on the Education Board's comprehensive report on character training. The report recommended that the Government establish youth leadership training centres to train full and parttime youth leaders to undertake work in Government and non-Government organisations such as community centres, sports associations, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Bible classes and youth leisure activities generally. The suggestion was warmly approved at a recent meeting of the association, which wrote back to the board recommending that such a centre be established ami that the Government be asked to assist with finance for equipment, buildings, etc. The association also suggested that the youth centres should approach the Behabilitation Board to select suitable leaders from among returned ex-servicemen, for the supervision of leisure activities. The board yesterday discussed both proposals, members pointing out that such commendable movements like the Scouts and Guides were,, sadly in need of leaders. The youth centre trainees should be paid personnel and they would be in a position to pass on their knowledge to the voluntary leaders in the youth movements. The board decided to approach the Government as stated.
