AUSTRALIA'S RAILWAYS
(1.35 p.m.) OANBEBRA, Aug. 22. The Commonwealth will prepare immediately for the unification of Australia's railway gauges, said the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) addressing the Premiers' Conference. The Premiers objected to the Commonwealth proposal to pay one-fifth ot the cost while the States shared the balance on a population basis, so the Commonwealth agreed to consider making a larger contribution.
