CITY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the City Council was held on Alonuay, the Mayor (Air Mansford) presiding. 'J here were ulso present Crs. G. Tromaino, J. T. Heafcley, R. L. Aitchison, C L. Mowlem, T. P. Hart, P S. l>arcoinb, V, F. Smillie, and F. G. Opie and Captain K. G. Chamberlain. The Palmcrston North Bowling Club advised that it was agicnable to the council's proposals about the establishment of new bowling greens for the club on the Campbell Street playing area. „Au objection was -received from Mr W. R. Rirnie. The council has inspected the area and is to discuss the subject at a works committee meeting.

Tt was reported that tho cleaning of the reservoir at Tiritoa had been completed. 'the council recently received an application for the bulk supply of gas, and a reply is being forwarded that it is> propared to guarantee a supply of 5000 cubic feet an hour, subject always to a satisfactory coal position, at a net cost to the purchaser of 5s per 1000 cubic feet.

The council received a letter from the B.P.C.A. request-ng that the. use of steel jaw traps should be forbidden when the by-laws are revised. The proposals wore referred to tho health, building and bylaws committee.

The city electrical engineer , (Mr D. Niven) was asked to report on tho possible provision of an emergency lighting system for tho Opera House The report of the city electrical engineer recorded an increase of 2.5 per com. for power requirements in July as compared with those of the corresponding month last year. The standby plant at 'terrace End had been closed down on August 3 and it was not anticipated that it would be required again until April, 1946. Six thousand three hundred yards of heavy four-core cable (weighing 105 tons) had arrived from England. Tho gas manager (Mr J. Learmonth) stated that in July there had been 1,240,000 cubic feet more gas sold than in the corresponding period of the' previous year. The transit manager (Mr J. R. Hardie) reported that the revenue from the municipal buses was £143 14s Id gicater in July than in July, 1944. The passengers carried totalled 119,781, a corresponding increase of 12,943.

Tho librarian (Mr IT. Greenwood) reported that in July the total books issued had been 16,690 as against 15,300 in the corresponding month of last year.
