DEATH FOR TREASON

THREE EAST INDIES AIRMEN. CANBERRA, Aug. 21. "Three Indonesian airmen stationed at Canberra were arrested and shot for treason in 1943. Secret Service investigators discovered that the three airmen were using the wireless transmitting set in their plane to communicate with the enemy. They had planned to fly out of Australia and surrender to the Japanese on an island north of Australia.

The three Indonesians were considered loyal until they were denounced on the 'aerodrome by a companion just as their plane was ready to take off. Though for security reasons the inci- ! dent was hushed up, it caused a sensation in Canberra. The three men were sent under armed guard to Melbourne, where a Court-martial found them guilty of treason. They were sentenced to death and were executed in terriI tory outside Australia.
