The Wanganui Education Board has appointed Messrs E. P. Hemmgvi ay and W. B. Tennent as its selection committee to interview students desiring admission to the Training College next year. Cr G. Tremaine has been reappointed the City Council's representative on the Garrison Band Committee. A letter from the committee eulogised Cr Tremaine's services to the band over a period of years. Mr R. S. Pearson, who saw extensive services in the Middle East, has joined the staff of the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North. Prior to his enlistment Mr Pearson was a member of the Justice' Department's staff at Hamilton.

[ Advice has been received by the Air Department of the award of the D.F.C. to the following three New Zealand airmen :—Acting-Squadron-Leader W. M. Murray, Mosgiel; Flight-Lieut. C. M. Simpson, Auckland; and FlightLieut. C G. Andrews, Wellington. Formerly well-known in Palmerston North bowling circles, Mr Martin Joseph Lee, or Brooklyn, Wellington, received latal injuries when he iell from a ladder at his home last evening. Mr Lee, who was aged 73, was a retired railway official, and when residing in Palmerston North was a member of the Northern Bowling Club. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr W. J. Anderson, who had been employed by the Palmerston North Hospital Hoard since 1935, was passed by the board at a meeting. The chairman (Mr J. A. Nash) said that Mr Anderson had been a most conscientious worker and the bo;ird had never had a more honourable employee. Mr M. W. Voss, of Karere, who recently was granted leave of absence for two months by the Kairanga County Council and the Manawatu Catchment Board, is at present engaged in a health-recruiting visit to Australia. It was reported at a meeting of the board yesterday, that Mr Voss had visited Queensland and New South W T ales.

Duff, of New Plymouth, has | been selected by the New Zealand j Employers' Federation as the represen- ! tative of the employers to attend the j International Labour Conference in I Pan's next October. He was the employers' representative on the Second Arbitration Court:—Press Assn. The death has occurred at Auckland of a pioneer of the film industry, Mr Henry John Hayward. Born in England in 1867, he came to New Zealand in 1905 and was associated with West's Pictures. In 1908 Mr Hayward realised that the cinema, had come to say. It grew amazingly and theatres arose all over New Zealand. Mr Hayward first created Hayward's Enterprises and then amalgamated with Fullers under the title of Fuller-Hayward Theatres Corporation.—Press Assn. The death has occurred of Sir Macpherson Robertson, in his 85th 3-ear, says a Melbourne message. He founded the great confectionery firm of Macßobertson's, which lie built from the smallest beginnings. His philanthropy and interest in welfare matters in Australia were demonstrated over many years. His gift of £20,000 made possible the last two Antarctic expeditions under the command of Sir Douglas Mawson. In 1934 he gave £20,000 in prizes for the London to Melbourne centenary air race. This was won by the British aviators Scott and Campbell-Black in the Comet, on which the Mosquito was based. Before the commencement of business at the monthly meeting of the Palmerston North High Schools Board of Governors the chairman (Mr M. H. Oram, M.P.) made feeling reference to the death of Mr T. R. Hodder an old member of the board and a staunch supporter of the schools, particularly the Boys' High School. His Jong years of service on the board had done much for secondary education in the city and his many acts of kindness to the pupils had endeared him in the hearts of hundreds of old boys. His passing had deprived the community of a fine character, but his work would be remembered for many years. A vote of 'sympathy was passed to Mrs Hodder and the members of the family.
