NAVY'S POCKET FLEET
SUCCESS OF LITTLE CRAFT. (Rec. 10 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 21. It is revealed that the Royal Navy's little ships, the motor torpedo-boats, the motor and the motor i launches of the coastal forces, fought j 780 actions during the war in Europe and sank more than 500 enemy vessels. | There were only two flotillas at the ; outbreak, but in four years the coastal force expanded a hundredfold. It employed 3000 officers and 22.000 ratines, of whom over 90 per cent, were of the R.N.V.R. The little ships, none of which ex-1 ceeded 120 tons, sank 48 E-boats, the j enemy's counterpart, and shot down 32 aircraft. The motor torpedo-boat | operations extended to the Norwegian fiords in 1942 and later into the Adri- • atic and Aegean Seas, where they developed a technique of boarding enemy vessels after' surprise attacks. During the war 170 of these tiny craft were , lost.
