FOR THE ART GALLERY.

Ik presenting the city with a water colour of a Palmerston North scene for its future art gallery members of the Rotary Club have fulfilled the motto which guides their activities. Their generosity no doubt will find a similar expression among other institutions in the future. The desire to have an art gallery established in Palmerston North is inherent in mostly every citizen, but not a great deal has been done to satisfy this desire. The hope has long since been expressed that, with the removal of the railway station and lines from the city, provision would be made for erecting a civic centre where the railway emerges into the Square, and the Mayor, in accepting the picture, referred to this matter, asking his audience to envisage a graceful avenue leading to an imposing array of buildings embracing an art gallery and museum. The opportunity, it is hoped, will soon be presented of translating this picture into reality and thus adding immensely to the city's cultural activities. The establishment of an art gallery will be welcomed, particularly for the opportunity it would give generous minded citizens to make a suitable presentation to the city.
