GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. MASTER MERUIT'S SUCCESS. GTIRISTCHUROII, An ff . 5. Following up his success in the Wellington Steeplechase. Master Meruit won theGrand National Steeplechase at Riccarton yesterday. Midwood had him near the front for most of the way and while there was nothing spectacular about his jumping, he never looked like making an error. He had the measure of his opponents seven furlongs from homo, and once ho was allowed to take the lead the issue was soon placed beyond doubt. His owner, Mr H. 11. Dods, Gisborno, has decided to rest Master Meruit till next • winter.

A field of nine went to the post and there were early thrills when Foxiana nearly lost his rider at the first, fence, and Steward wont down at the second. Stevens made a fine recovery on Foxiana, and the horse soon pulled his way to the front. Thereafter ho gave his customary display of brilliant fencing, which pleased the crowd so much that tJiey gave him an ovation as he led past the stands beginning the final round. It was not till they had jumped the sod wall five furlongs from home that Foxiana began to tire, and from this stage Master Meruit had the topweight's measure and went on to retain a slight lead till the final fence, and then drew away to score an easy win. Dauber ran well to head Foxiana in a close contest for second money. Dauber jumped splendidly and was unlucky lo suffer an interrupted preparation. Abbey Ln and Kilmanagh plodded on for fouiih and fifth, Kilmanagh giving a promising showing for a mare who had never been schooled over the country. Kanui to I'M, the favourite, stumbled over the fallen Tonorman at the sod wall by the five furlongs the last time round. Ho would not have Avon, but he was going well enough to have secured a place The Southland mare Royal Flight further demonstrated her class by winning the Winter Cup under 10.1 in a hard finish with last year's winner. Gulf Stream. Royal Flight lost some ground in the middle stages of the race, but made it up in the straight in grand style, and wore down Da Vinci and Gulf Stream to win impressively. She may now bo ■> sent lo Australia,. Caithness did best of the beaten horses in the Winter Cup, finishing solidly after a slow beginning and covering extra ground. The second favourite. Ramicourt, was never a possibility. Da Vinci performed well in his first start in open company and probably was short of a race, this being his first, public appearance since June. There was a bad smash in the Trial Hurdles when five horses fell. Lotto, who was trailing the leaders, fell near the mile post. As he was getting up, Manakore struck him and fell, and Court Dress, Lord Broiefort and Minority came down over them. Manakore was severely injured and had to be destroyed. Another horse destroyed on the day was Great Divide, who brake a fetlock while running prominently in the Avonliead Handicap. The totalisator handled £137,611 10s, compared with £119.458 on the first day last year, an increase of £18,153 10s. Additional results: PAPARUA HANDICAP.
