Advice has boon received from the Admiralty that the King lias approved of the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to T/Lieut. C. J. Wright, Royal New Zealand Naval- Volunty.T Reserve, of Hastings, for courage and skill in' coastal force actions in the Mediterranean in December, 1944. Lieutenant Lawrence. Hampton, M.JVI. of the Second N.Z.E.F., son of Mr and Mrs 11. Hampton, of Shamrock Street, Palmerston North, who is reported killed in action, had an outstanding career in the Forces. Born in Martgatainoka, he was educated at the Carterton Convent School and St. Patrick's College, Silverstream. A good Rugby footballer, he was a member of the Silverstream first fifteen for a number of years and captain for two seasons. He came to Pa'lmerston North for a period and while in the city played for the Kia Toa Club. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities be joined the Army as a drill instructor and later went to the Middle East as a warrant officer. He was wounded in April, 1943, and in the following month was awarded the Military Medal. Subsequently he was promoted to commissioned rank.
