GERMANS STILL STRONG
TEMPORARY ADVANTAGE.
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 4The United States Secretary of War (Mr Stimson) stated in Washington today that despite the early success of the United States counter-offensive the Germans still have enough power to start a new offensive, though probably not comparable with the Ardennes assault. "Having made his gamble the enemy is not yet {Milling out," he said. "He is not willing to retire from his ternporary advantage*. He has dug in at certain points of the perimeter and lias maintained enough troops in the centre to make another push possible. Mr Stimson also declared that in spite of the speed of the German break-through the United States losses in tanks were only 6 per cent. heavier than the normal monthly attrition rate. A total of 22,340 German prisoners had been captured between December 16 and Monday. No accurate account of United States losses in casualties had yet been received.
