CHRISTMAS IN THE CITY
Christmas Eve, which usually brings a 'large number of people to Palmerston North, was celebrated locally last evening and again attracted a large number of suoppers and pleasureseekers. Business was brisk in aH quarters. Buses running from Feilding throughout the day were well patronised passengers in many instances having'to stand. The assistance of the Traffic Department under the supervision of Mr J. Shearer was invaluable to both motorists and pedestrians in averting possible congestion. Working conditions m the telegrapn department of the Chief Post Office, Palmerston North, still continued at hi"h pressure, said Mr J. ¥. Sullivan, senior supervisor of the department, this mon'ing. An exceptionally large volume of greetings telegrams was still pouring in. The traffic handled yesterday compared with that for the corresponding day last year showed an allround increase of 84 per cent. In the postal department the senior supervisor there (Mr W. P. Coleman) said that everything was just about clear because of the public's response to the request to post early.
