JAPANESE WAR CRIMES
CANBERRA, Nov. 30
Australia is determined that the Japanese war criminals will shoulder the responsibility for their crimes. Giving this assurance in the House of Representatives today, the Minister of External Affairs (Dr. Evatt) said: "The Australian Government is determined that nothing that can be done to punish those responsible for brutality and cruelty will be left undone. The suffering and indignities imposed on our soldiers cannot be condoned."
Dr Evatt was presenting a report by Sir William Webb, Chief Justice of Queensland, who was appointed special commissioner to inquire into Japanese atrocities in New Guinea and elsewhere. The Minister said there was evidence that the Japanese had maltreated, tortured and massacred Australian military and civilian personnel as well as natives in New Guinea.
