WIDER CANADIAN CHASM
OTTAWA, Nov. 30. Although the Prime Minister (MiMackenzie King) is expected to get a vote of confidence on the conscription issue, because of the overwhelming majority his party enjoys, it is doubtful whether lie can heal the wounds in his party and throughout the country. The French-Canadian Province of Quebec, for reasons rooted in its history, language and religion, is fanatically isolationist. The French-Canadi-ans are deeply suspicious of Englishspeaking Canadians, and they resent, even hate, England itself. Quebec Liberals say they will never forgive Mr King for going back on his promises not to conscript for service ovei"vis, while Mr King's English-speaidng Liberals wiil never forgive their leadsr for kow-towing to Quebec's isolationists for the past five years. The tragic aspect of the whple affair is that the chasm which has div-ded the two language groups is now widening and the nation is splitting into tno separate countries.
