NEW YEAR RACING

DON QUEX AGAIN

MARTON CUP SUCCESS. SPRINT TO LADY AGORA. (By “Spectator.”) Favoured by ideal conditions, the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday was an assured success. There was a large ai tendance and speculation was brisk with the result that £51,061 10s was put through the totalisator compared with £48,152 10s last year. The racing was keen all day and five favourites scored. The scratching pen was freely used and in the big sprint onlyfour runners paraded. As expected Broificld won the Maiden Race very comfortably after trailing Lo Zin, Prince Wheriko, and Playfellow to the straight. Theiolyn, a warm favourite, beat the two-year-olds narrowly. Had Dancing Water not run about so much in the straight she would have made the winner’s task more difficult.

Gold Quest opened up a big lead in the early stages of the Ald worth Stakes, but could not hold it and in a close finish Phoenix just wrested the honours from All Bunsby and Spirit. Glaciate took the lead early in the Rata Hurdles and held it throughout, jumping splendidly. Flying Spy was al-way-s second. Don Quex repealed his Manawatn Cup success by an easy win in the Marton Cup. He did not put in an appearance until entering the straight whore lie went past the leaders and easily held off all challenges. Good Scout came heme well and Airport, who was unlucky by losing a good deal of ground when the, barrier rose, put up a fine performance.' Happy Ending was a surprising favourite and was not dangerous over the final stages. A. G. Waddell again rode the winner splendidly. Tliiy gave G. W. New his third win of the day. .

Lady Acora led all the way to win the McManaway Memorial Handicap from Potautau and Killeymoon. Thus the big “double” went to A. G. Waddell and both carried No. 7 saddlecloth. Four bf the six events decided so far had been won by the Waddell brothers. Lastik was nicely handled to score in the Now Year Handicap after Foxada, Bendcmcer, and W'hero had been prominent all the way. Aspen came from, a long way back to be second. Skvhawk and Da rag had the final race practically to themselves and after Darag had made all the running Skvhawk won easily in time better than that done by the open sprinters. Results: —
