ALLIED CITIES CHEERFUL
LONDON, Jan. 1
Thousands of persons representing many nations gathered in the darkness of the Llacked-out streets of London’s West End to welcome in 1944. The Daily Telegraph says the hope that the New Year would bring an Allied victory was the keynote of the celebrations. People began to assemble at 11 p.m. laughing,, cheering, and singing. Most were in uniform. There was an outburst of chcerin" at midnight. Xcw Year’s gaiety on Broadway was the greatest sinco Pearl Harbour, savs a New York message. Crowds surged through Times Square animated by the same spirit ns moved the entire Allied world-w.th singing hearts and hopes that 1944 would bring -victory in Europe and great advances towards Tokio.
