Mr and Airs H. Grinstead, of Palmerston North, have received a cable message from their son Gunner S. J. Grinstead, who -was recently reported wounded in action, stating that the wound is not serious. President Roosevelt last week contracted a cold which developed into influenza, and he was ordered to remain in bed, says a AA’ashington cable. A later message states that the President’s temperature is again normal, but he is still confined to bed.

The following Post Office promotions arc anounced :—Mr J. Madden, second deputy director-general, to be deputy director-general; Mr 11. M. Patrick, divisional director, to be second deputy director-general; Mr P. N. Cryer, principal, G.P.0., to be divisional director; Mr C. 0. Coad, chief clerk, G.P.0., to be divisional director.

The death lias occurred of Sir Edwin Lutyens, the famous architect, states a London cable. His works include the Whitehall Cenotaph, the British School of Art in Rome, the British Pavilion, Paris, 1900, the British Art Exhibition Building in Rome, the Picture Gallery and South African War Memorial in Johannesburg, and the new British Embassy in Washington. He was one of the principal architects of the Imperial War Graves Commission.

A recent casualty list records that Licpt. D. P. Lindsay, of the staff of ■ the Dannevirke High School, has been killed in action. Born in 1906, the late Lieut. Lindsay attended the Timaru Boys’ High School and later Canterbury College, where his studios were interrupted in 1928 while lie attended the Olympic Games at Amsterdam as a swimming representative of New Zealand. Completing his degree with honours in Latin the following year, he subsequently took a teaching appointment at the Dilworth School, Auckland. Later lie was appointed to the Dannevirke High School. In 1940 he went into camp and for some time served in New Zealand before going overseas a few months ago. While at the school he was associated with its various activities, being the conductor of the orchestra, and he also participated in football and swimming instruction. It was on account of his proficiency in swimming that this sport has had a very successful period in Dannevirke. One year every boy nnd girl attending the High School attained certificates in proficiency in artificial respiration as the result of Lieut. Lindsay’s coaching. In 1925, while at school, he held the Dominion ‘intermediate championships, while two years later he won the Dominion senior dhampionships over 220, 440, 880 yards, and one mile. His best years at the sport were from 1925 to 1928. Lieut. Lindsay is the second master of the school’s teaching staff to give his life. Major J. J. Britland having died of wounds in the Pacific some weeks ago.
