GERMAN FAILURE

RUSSIANS HOLD THRUSTS ENEMY BJEGEOUPING LONDON, July 14. In Russia the Germans are still concentrating their attacks on the southern end of the KurskOrel salient, but after another day of heavy fighting they have failed to break through the Rus-

sian lines and reach open country.

The, Germans have been making every effort to widen and deepen the wedge driven into the Russian lines, and have not maintained their pressure at the northern end of the bulge, where it is believed von Kluge (the German commander on this front) is regrouping his forces after their heavy losses.

A late despatch from Moscow reports that heavy Russian counter-at-tacks with tanks have turned Back the Germans from the wedge. Berlin says that the German advance has been stopped by heavy rain, and for the second day the enemy says that the Russians have made diversionary attacks north and south of Orel and have broken the German lines. Moscow does not mention these attacks.

Britain is sending £3,000,000 worth of clothing to Russia to meet the acute shortage there.
