CHAMPION HORSES.

COMPARISON WITH PAST. AUCKLAND, Dec. 28. The champion racehorse Kindergarten set the seal to his fame hy his recordbreaking victory in the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie on Saturday. It was a remarkable effort, and he is now being compared with such giants of the past as Carbine and Phar Lap. Comparisons betweon horses of' ono period and another arc futile, yet there aro many who regard Kindergarten as the beat ever bred in the Dominion. Thero is no quesiton that Kindergarten is a great horse. Great in galloping ability, in courage and in will to win. Alio, like most great horses, ho has both speed and stamina. Carbine was a champion at a mile, ho was a champion at two miles; so was Phar Lap, and so is Kindergarten. Times and conditions when the horses have raced have been vory different, but a comparison of their record* may be interesting. Carbine ran 43 times for 33 wins, six seconds, three thirds and once unplaced for £29,626 in stakes. Phar Lap started 51 times lor 37 wins, three seconds, two thirds and nine times unplaced for £66,738 in stakes. Kindergarten has run in 26 races for 18 firsts, three seconds, two thirds and three times unplaced for £12,710 in slakes. An interesting fact, concerning their records is that Carbine had 15 consecutive wins, Phar Lap 14 and Kindergarten has had 10. Carbine and Phar Lap were both Melbourne Cup winners and a comparison of their performances in that event with tho win of Kindergarten in the Auckland Cup may bo given. When Carbine won the Melbourne Cup as a five-year-old in 1890 he carried 10.5 and ran the two miles in There were 39 runners and that naturally made his task difficult. Moreover, tracks, with tho careful attention they receive now, aro undoubtedly faster than in his day. When Pliar Lap won the Melbourne Cup as a four-year-old in 1930 he carried 9.12 and ran the two miles in 3.27|. Thero wcro 15 runners. The record for the Melbourne Cup is held by the New Zealand horse Wotan, who won in 1936 in 3.212. Tho New Zealand record for two niiles is held by Seronata, who ran 3.20 4-5 in the New Zealand Cup in 1940. When Kindergarten won the Auckland Cup on Saturday he carried 10.2 and won by five lengths in the race record time of 3,22. Thero were 19'runnors. Kindergarten was bred by his owner, Mr E. N. Fitzgerald, Gisborne.
