SIRTE OCCUPIED

METHODICAL PURSUIT. LONDON, Dec. 26. A Middle East joint communique states: “Our troops occupied Sirte (halfway between El Agheila and Tripoli) at midday yesterday. Yesterday two heavily-laden barges, sailing southward off the coast of Tunisia and the railway near Sousse were successfully attacked by fighters. One of our aircraft is missing. Advanced units of the Eighth Army, methodically pursuing Rommel’s forces, are reported to have reached Buerat (40 miles beyond Sirte), says the Morocco radio. Rommel left a strong Italian garrison at Misurata.

The Berlin News Agency states that a strong tank and motorised force from the Eighth Army has thrust over 60 miles into the Libyan desert in an attempt to outflank the Germans and Italians.
