OHAKEA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) There was a very large crowd of children and adults at the annual Christmas tree and party given by the Women’s Institute. A large Christmas tree laden with gifts stood in the centre of the floor. A happy time was passed with dancing and games and a number of carols were beautifully sung by the school choir. The arrival of Father Christmas was the signal for much excitement and he distributed the gifts from the tree. Music for the dances'and carols was played by Mrs 11. Barber, Mr N. Lcet, Sirs H. Rcdpath, and Messrs R. and E. Hartley. Mrs W. Robinson (president) thanked those who had given their services for the function.

The end of the school year was marked by the holding of parents ’day. There was a large crowd present and the time was spent with drill displays by the seniors and juniors and programmes of songs were given by the Senior and junior classes. Large displays of art and craft work were on view, including an outstanding exhibit of poker work, pewter work, and woodwork. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn by the senior girls, following which Mr H. Ellery (chairman) thanked the parents for their attendance and the staff and children for their displays. The leaving certificates were presented to Dell Ellery, Lorraine Henderson, and Emily Walker, and the Dux Cup and miniature were presented to Dell Ellery by the donor, Mr B. Henderson.

The annual meeting of the Patriotic Committee was held recently, Mr 11.

B. Redpath presiding. Correspondence was received from Zone E headquarters concerning the dispatch of parcels and it was decided to increase the local quota by one-third as required. The total parcels will now be 20 and arrangements wero made to purchase the goods required. The chairman’s report traced the year’s activities which included the usual farewells, provision of parcels, and raising of appeal funds. The balancesheet showed that £lO7 had been contributed to the year’s appeal and £27 remained in hand towards the provision of parcels, ft was decided to continue forwarding parcels to local boys overseas who now number 12. The following officers were elected: —Chairman: Mr H. B. Rcdpath: secretary and treasurer, Mr I. N. Lcet; buying committee, Misses M. Bailey and N. Masters; general committee, Mesdames N. Lcet, R. Scott,. Misses W. and M. Bailey, C. Mills, N. Masters. Messrs li. Masters, C. E. Vile, 11. Ellery, H. Whitehead, R. Bailey, G. McDonell, A. Hartley, R. Scott. A discussion in connection with the raising of the 1943 appeal quota took place and it was decided to organise a stock drive during the year. Votes of thanks wore accorded the chairman and secretary for their work. Mr 11. -Ellery presided over the meeting of the S-rhool Committee. General business was dealt with and it was decided to purchase a large first, aid kit for the school. The problem of winter fuel was dealt with and tentative arrangements made for a supply. The head teacher’s report gave the roll number at 54, but the attendance was greatly affected owing to sickness. Keen sympathy will be accorded Mr and Mrs S. .T. Skinner in the passing of their son Michael, who was a pupil of the local school. Miss C. Mills has left, for the holidays at Blenheim. Mr and Mrs H. Masters have returned from a short holiday in Wellington. Mrs Barnard spent a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs 11. Ellery. Mrs Dennis Ellery has returned from a holiday in the Nelson district with her parents. Misses S. Sadler and B. Matthews are home from college for the vacation.
