RACING CARNIVAL

AT AWAPUNI

LARGE HOLIDAY CROWD

ALCHEMY AT LONG ODDS

There was a very large holiday crowd at Awapuni to-day for the conclusion of the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting. The track was in good order and the weather fine and cool.

The outside motor paddock could not accommodate all the cars driven to the course and another had to be requisitioned and it filled rapidly. Congestion at the gates was well handled.

There was a big surprise in file Linton Highwcight, the opening event, when Alchemy led all the way to win easily and pay about a third of a century. When the field had settled down Cheetah, Glaciate, and First Role were filling the role of leaders and there was little change in the order until three furlongs from home. Here Israel and Nightglass raced forward but could not reach Alchemy and the best Nightglass could get was another second. Glaciato hung on for third. Israel stopped badly and Moderate was never sighted. BAUROSA WINS NICELY.

Following a good effort last week Barrosa won the Juvenile Handicap nicely. Gulf stream began best but was quickly joined by Star Peer, with Barrosa tucked in behind them. Morran and Lady Nahleen made up some ground entering the straight, and in the run to th># judge Barrosa ran past the leaders to win nicely from Star Peer, who hung on for second from Gulf Stream who disappointed in both his races at the meeting. POMPIT AGAIN.

Pompit repealed his winning performance of the first day with a. splendid effort in the Apprentices’ Handicap. Following Thcolatcral, Donegal Bay, and Lady Spiral to the straight he then put in his claim and had the race won a furlong from home. Lady Spiral* hung on nicely" to take second place from Theolatcral. Sir Bradbury, who did not get out very well, put in a good run to take second placo entering the_ straight but then ran very wide and spoilt a good chance.

YOGI’S GOOD FORM. Yogi registered another splendid performance when ho again scored in the principal event of the day, the Louisson Memorial Handicap. It was a fast run race. Lastik early took the lead and with Amigo set a strong pace out in front from Good Scout and Enrich. Coming round the homo turn Lastik retired and Amigo showed the way from Enrich, Moutoa Bond, Good Scout, and Yogi on the rails. .The latter forged through and in an exciting finish took the honours from Good Scout by a narrow margin. Amigo wa6 well clear, with Moutoa Bond close up. SEA QUEX CONSISTENT.

Another double winner at the meeting was found in the Highdcn Handicap when Sea Qucx won well. Tctratina, Flying Hawk, aiid The Whippcr were most prominent early from Sea Quex and Jolly Ruler. Royal Counsellor loomed up from the back two furlongs from home and followed 'letratina into the straight. The latter was beaten at the distance. Sea Quex finished . well on the outside to just heat Royal Counsellor with Nighean, who finished very well, in third place. RACING IN DETAIL.
