JAPANESE JUST ESCAPE.
BRITISH ENCIRCLING MOVE. (Ree. 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Dec. 25. How the .Japanese withdrew from the Western Burma frontier district to avoid attack was described by Lieutenant-General N. M. S. Irwin, Commander of the Indian Eastern Army, in a Christmas mcssago to the troops. Ho said: “We have so far assured the integrity of India’s Eastern frontier against invasion, and our forces are moving steadily, if slowly, forward into Burma, and have occupied another district just over the Bengal border. Unhnppily, .the enemy was aware of his impending fate, and the day before the final encirclement his advanced troops withdrew.” A New Delhi cable states that it is revealed that the British are steadily advancing into Burma and have reoccupied another district just over the Bengal border. A communique from India states: “A small formation of It.A.F. fighters made a low level attack on the Japanese aerodrome of Magwc. Enemy aircraft on the ground were shot up, but further results could not be observed. Enemy fighters were encountered over the target area and several combats took place, most of the Japanese aircraft being damaged. Two of ours are missing.”
