Mr E. V. Daldy, manager at Huntly of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred to Foxton in a similar capacity. Appointments to the Veterinary Surgeons' Board are announced. They are Mr W. C. Ring, Dr. C. S. M. Hopkirk, and Mr H. S. Kyle, M.P. Friends of Mr B. J. Jacobs, of Boy Street, will be pleased to learn that he is making progress towards recovery from his illness. He will not be about for a week, however. The Commander-in-Chief, Middle East (General Alexander) personally drove his own train when he performed the official opening ceremony of the Haifa-Beirut-Tripoli (Lo'ianon) railway, up the west coast of Syria, on Sunday, says a message from Cairo.
The death has occurred at Rotorua of Mr A. L. Moore, M.A., until recently acting-headmaster of the New Plymouth Boys' High School. Mr Moore, who was 60 years of age, was director of technical education at New Plymouth for more than 23 years.
The friends of Captain Stanley Wilson will be pleased to learn of the honour accorded him by being mentioned in dispatches. Well-known in Palmerston North for his interest in the Garrison Band, of which he was drum-major for some time, and in Freemasonry, he will be widely congratulated upon the distinction he has received.
A pleasing function of unusual interest was held at the Levin Bowling Club green on Saturday afternoon when, at the adjournment for afternoon tea, the president (Mr I. C. Lemmon) asked all the bowlers present to do honour to one of their members in Mr N. A. Anderson, who had on that day attained the age of 90 years. The president asked MiAnderson to accept a birthday cake and good wishes from every member of the club with which he had been associated for many years.
The selection of Miss Mabel B. Howard as the official Labour candidate for the Christchurch East seat was announced at a meeting of the Labour Representation Committee and members of affiliations in the electorate by Mr W. Moohan (national secretary of the Labour Party). She is the daughter of the late Mr E. J. Howard, for 20 years M.P. for Christchurch South, and is the only woman secretary in the Dominion of a large industrial union. She has taken a prominent part in women's war activities.
