SUCCESSES IN PACIFIC
GENERAL PRAISES TROOPS. (Rec. 1.15 p.m.) SYDNEY', Dec. 23. Congratulations on recent successes, “which nt'c but. forerunners of the great offensive action which will bring victory to our cause and peace to the Pacific,” are contained in an order of the day issued by General Blarney as his Christmas greeting to Australian and American troops in the South-West Pacific area. The order goes on to warn the troops of “hard and bitter” fighting ahead.
A Melbourne cable states that the average Australian soldier spends only twopence a day on beer in the army canteens. This is disclosed by an analysis of the canteen takings. The consumption of soft drinks is at a much higher level. Indeed to cone with the demand the canteens hoard established several aerated water and cordial factories. No liquor other than cordials has been sent to New Guinea since August,
