GAINED BY AMERICA ENEMY’S TASK HARDER LONDON, Nov. 17. The United States Secretary to the Navy (Colonel Knox), commenting on the Solomons victory,
said that it was a major action, and the Japanese losses were so
heavy that they would make the enemy’s return to attack again more difficult.
The United States had gained sea supremney over the area around Guadalcanal, but the Japanese would make another effort to recapture their lost positions in the Solomons. President Roosevelt has described the Solomons battle as a Great United States victory. An American radio report says that the Japanese shipping losses, including warships and merchantmen, since the Pearl Harbour outrage on December 7 last total 502.
