UNWILLING DANES

NAZIS INCREASE PRESSURE. LONDON, Oct. 6. The Danes are waiting tensely to see whether the Danish Nazi Free Corps will return to the Russian front on October 12 when their leave ends. It is believed that the corps may be employed in establishing a political regime similar to that in Norway, which, liko Denmark, has been singled out for incorporation in a Germanic federation. The departure of the members of the corps on October 12 will ho interpreted as meaning that the hour lias not yet arrived for tho Danish Nazi leader (Herr Clausen) to act. However, neutral opinion in Stockholm is that Hitler considers the time has come for tho creation of the German federation as a nucleus of a new Europe. The German demands on Denmark, which are believed to have led to tlio present tension, are: (1) Tho construction of a military highway through Jutland; (2) more drastic measures against sabotage; (3) German control of the Danish police; and (4) German officials to hold key positions in the Ministry of Justice. These demands were -submitted when the German Minister, Renthefink, returned to Copenhagen after a visit to Berlin in September. King Christian flatly turned down a further demand for anti-Jewish legislation. King Christian, on the contrary, attended a special celebration in the Copenhagen Synagogue, thus "■reatly annoying the Germans. ° According to evidence received in London, the Germans arranged the return to Denmark of the Free Corps, knowing it would be resented, and planning to use the resentment as an excuse for further repressive measures QUARREL OVER SPOILS. It is officially announced in Zagreb that the Quisling dictator of Croatia, Pavelitch, is assuming the Ministry of Defence, replacing General Kvaternik, who has been granted leave of absence for health reasons. The Daily Telegraph's correspondent on the German frontier says the leave of absence is tantamount to Kvaternik's dismissal and marks the culmination of bitter political differences between tho pro-Italian Pavelitch and the pro-German Kvaternik. It also emphasises, the discord between the supporters of Germany and Italy within their spheres of interest in the Balkans.
