DIEPPE PRISONERS

TO BE PUT IN IRONS GERMAN THREAT LONDON, Oct. 7. Alleging, without foundation, that the British are ill-treating prisoners, the Germans have threatened to take reprisals against the 2500 British prisoners, mostly Canadians, captured in the Dieppe raid. As from noon to-morrow these prisoners are to be put in irons. The Germans state that this will be as a reprisal for the alleged tying up of prisoners captured by the British during a recent raid on Sark, in the Channel Islands.

The War Office says that, after the allegations made some time ago byBerlin that the British were tying the hands of prisoners, the Germans concerned were interrogated but none had had his hands tied nor did any of them complain of the treatment received from the British. This statement could be proved by the German protecting Power. Any of the prisoners could be seen by representatives of the German protecting Power to confirm this. In view of the facts, the War Office says that if tho Germans carry out their threat to put British prisoners in irons the future treatment of German prisoners will be considered. The British hold 23,000 German and 222,000 Italian nrisoners, while the Germans are holding 90,000 and the Italians 25,000 British prisoners.
