FEILDING NEWS

Six tons of waste paper were despatched to Wellington from the local depot this week.

The formation of a women's section of the Returned Services Association was carried out at a meeting over which Mr I''. J. Allen presided. Mr Allen said the women's section would have opportunity to tackle problems concerning the welfare of women who are serving in the military services, while those whose husbands and near relatives were engaged in active service would meet from time to timo to discuss matters of mutual interest. Not infrequently there were problems which exercised the minds of women concerning relatives, and information and assistance could be given to them by tho women's section. On the motion of Mesdamcs T. Donaldson and A. C. McCorkindale, it was decided that the section be formed. Mrs Allen was elected patron and Mrs W. G. Booth president. A provisional committee comprising Mesdames Murray, McCorkindale, Ingram, McGregor,' Donaldson, Brandt and Corkill was set up. Enrolments number over 30 so far. At a later date a further meeting is to be hold for the purpose of strengthening the organisation. Lieutenant J. M. Telford, who left Feilding with the Third Echelon and was reported missing during operations in the Middle East theatre of war, is now reported to be a prisoner of war. His parents are Mr and Mrs It. P. Telford, of Sandilands Street. At a meeting of the Lytton Street School Committee the question of the establishment of a dontal clinic at the school was discussed when a letter was received from the Wanganui Education Board stating that its aehitect (Mr Hodge) had been instructed to supply a report on the possible use of the children's cloakroom as a clinic. Upon receipt of the report the board is further to consider the matter. The board's decision to alter the school bus routes so as to take in, the Cemetery Road and eliminate Mangaono Road was discussed. It was 6tatcd that the Makino Road residents resented the change, which was designed to effect a saving of 16.2 miles per day in tho distance travelled by tho service. It was pointed out that the Makino Road children would have to cycle or walk to the picking-up point, whereas the children" on Cemetery Road would be transported by bus. The views of householders at Makino arc to be ascertained and representations made to the board with a view to having the original service reinstated. It was felt that the Makino rosidents were entitled to a satisfactory service in consequence of the closing of the Makino Road school and its consolidation with the Lytton Street School. The headmaster (Mr W. 11. Smith) reported a school roll of 387 and an average attendance of 94 por cent. The ten tons of waste rubber collected by the children had been forwarded to a depot in the town It was stated that the chairman (Mr C. V. Jewell) had forwarded a cablo of congratulation to Sergeant Keith Elliott, V.C., while a fitting ceremony had been held at tho school when tho thrilling news of tho former pupils honour had reached Feilding. A donation of £4 was made to the Community Centro for the use of educational films and projector plant. There was a full muster of the supply section of the E.P.S. at a meeting on Wednesday. Buist presided and welcomed the co-ordination from other section? afforded by tho presence of Controllers McCorkindale (accommodation), McClure (D.O.REJ, Sporle fire fighting) and 'Sergeant Turner (law and order). Captain MeClure outlined the action required from the supply section in relation to his unit, the instructions being largely of a confidential nature.
