ALL BEATEN OFF
STRONG NAZI ATTACKS REDS REGAIN BUILDINGS LONDON, Oct. 6. The defenders of Stalingrad have beaten off yet another big attack by the Germans, who have not made any further progress in their drive directed at the centre of the city. The News-Chronicle correspondent in Moscow says -that the latest German attack was on a tremendous scale, and the enemy infantry and .100 tanks launched 20 assaults from dawn to dusk, all of which were beaten off. In other sectors the Russians recaptured several blocks of buildings. Meantime, the correspondent continues Marshal Timoshenko’s forces kept up their pressure and beat off German counter-attacks. The relief efforts being made by the Russians north-west and South-west of the city are having an important effect by pinning down large forces of German troops who would otherwise be available for fighting in other sectors. In one area of the factory settlement 12 German tanks broke through, but by the end of the day the Russians had destroyed all but one.
The German thrusts towards the Grozny oifields are still being held in the Mozdok area, and the stubborn Russian resistance south-east of Novorossisk is effectively preventing further progress by the enemy towards the Black Sea port of Tuapse. In the Sinyavino sector the Russians have beaten off attacks by two divisions in the last two days and inflicted about 4000 casualties on the enemy.
