Women Police.

The number of women ■ police in New Zealand is to be doubled, bringing the total to 20. A,ll are being stationed at the four chief centres.

Unusual Polyanthus Blooms. Two unusual polyanthus blooms were recently grown in the garden of a Palmerston North resident, each stalk having no fewer than 203 flowers and the other 171. National Savings Quotas. Last week 140 towns (including 14 of the 18 main provincial centres) attained their National Savings quotas. This is 31 more than for the preceding week and the largest number recorded for some months. Student Labour For Farms.

A unified scheme for the provision of student labour for farms during the coming school holidays is being prepared by the National Service department, which is seeking the co-operation of primary production councils and committees in handling the farmers’ side of the undertaking. Conscientious Objectors and Bowls.

“That no entries be received from conscientious objectors for centre competitions,’ 1 is a motion which will be considered by the Christchurch Bowling Centre at its next meeting Notice of motion to this effect has been given by Mr W. D. Graham, of the Returned Services’ Association Club. Remedial Treatment.

Acting under the instructions of the Army Department, the police to-day withdrew a charge against a reservist of failing to report for medical treatment, and the warrant for his arrest was cancelled by the Magistrate (Mr H. P. Lawry), this action being taken as a result of the change of policy regarding compulsory remedial treatment for Army service. A Good Record.

At the annual meeting of the Charles Haines Advertising Agency, Ltd., hold recently in Wellington, mention was made of the fact that no less than 31 members of the staff were with the Armed Forces (as distinct from Home Guard, E.P.S. and similar organisations). This represented 86 per cent, of the agency’s pre-war male staff. To date, fortunately, the only casualty was one member who is a prisoner of war in Italy. City Engineer's Offices.

At the current rate of progress it is expected that the city engineer and the gas manager will be accommodated in their new temporary offices in Jersey Lane by Monday next, a little over three weeks since the foundations of the building were put down. The floors are now laid and the walls up, while the doors from the building now being demolished are being hung in the temporary offices. The offices are finished in wall-board the exterior being of wood. Intermediate Pupils. The unsatisfactory conditions under which Intermediate School pupils are working were referred to by the Russell Street School Committee at its monthly meeting. It was resolved that other city schools be approached, seeking their support in a request to be made to the Wanganui Education Board, that, unless the Intermediate School building is made available for the _ first term of next year, those pupils passing out of Standard 4 be allowed to remain at their respective primary schools, and those children at present in the Intermediate School Form I be transferred to their original primary schools. West End School. As the replacement of the brickwork with wood in the front section of the West End School has now reached an advanced stage, some of the classes accommodated elsewhere have now returned. The replacement was made necessary following earthquake damage, but the primer classes remained at the school as that part of the building used by them was not damaged. Two classes which have been at the Central School are now back at West End, and others now at the Girls’ High School will return within two or three weeks. The general conformation of the school building has been retained in the rebuilding, and fanlights have been placed at the bottoms of the windows, this being an improvement on the previous arrangement. The finished sections present a neat and workmanlike job.
