UNITED GUILD

Mrs W. F. Field presided at the .September meeting of the United Guild executive. Tlio secretary (Mrs W. A. Jacques) reported that though there bad been no footless socks to complete, the workroom had been busy reconditioning garments for overseas. The now spinning wheel had arrived from Wellington and there was another wheel temporarily lent by Mrs C. Ale!villa, so' that six wheels were now operating. Mrs Sinclair reported that yarn had been forwarded to the Manawatu County Club for knitting into seaboots, skull caps and mittens for the minesweepers, and several pairs of ecaboots and jerkins bad been made . by members of the spinning group for individual sailors. A letter bad been received from Miss Bayliss, of the British W.V.S., expressing thankk for gifts sent through the Y.M.C.A. for women in khaki. So far very little yarn for civilian use had been spun, such as for air raid victims, but it was hoped that after shearing this position would be improved, as suitable fleeces should then become available, such as crossbred, Merino or lambs’ wool. An appeal was being made to all those who had learned spinning at the guild to make a monthly contribution, of yarn suitable. either for the Armed Forces or . for civilian war victims. In this way it was hoped to keep up the supply of wool for the knitting groups, which were finding wool increasingly difficult to obtain. In a letter from a sailor on a destroyer read to the guild recently it was stated that the New Zealand men were the envy of all the members of the other Allied navies as they wore the only ones who got these “home spun-in-thc-greaso” seaboots stockings and jerkins which were warm even when they were wet. Warm woollen garments for air raid victims were also urgently required as the fuel rationing and raid damage made warm clothing more than ever necessary. It was announced that there would be a bring-and-buy table at the next meeting to I raise funds for another spinning wheel. I The guild thanked the following:—The | W.D.F.U., working party of the National Club, Cuba Street Methodist Guild, Mesdamos Harris (Rangiwahia), Iloddcr, I Buchanan and Mitchell for donations, and the management and staff of the P.D.C.
