NATIONAL SAYINGS
The end of September brought to a finish the “Spring Offensive on the Home-Front" launched by the National Savings Committee with the object of stimulating tho regular use of national savings accounts. The results achieved wore notable and can be judged by the following comparison of figures for the last week with those of the first week which aro shown in brackets: —Now accounts opened, 1600 (681); amount deposited (excluding bond sales), £70,305 (£51,011) ; number of deposits made, 87,496 (66,470). Over tho five weeks of the campaign 5423 new accounts were opened, and 397,959 deposits totalling £297,449 were made to accounts.
In the final week of the campaign, Christchurch again led the other eeventeen chief postal districts with 27.3 -per cent, of accounts used. Dunedin with 26.4 per cent, reached second place and Auckland with 25.4 per cent, was third. Wellington for the first time was unplaced, being fourth with 24.1 per cent, of accounts lised. The other centres in order of merit wero as follow:—New Plymouth, 23.4 per cent.; Westport, 22.9 per cent. ; Nelson, 21.2 per cent. ; Greymouth, 20.9 per cent.; Palmerston North, 20.8 per cent.; Napier, 2C.7 per cent. ; Wanganui, 19.1 per cent. ; Blenheim, 17.2 per cent.; Hamilton, 16.3 per cent.: Oamaru, 15.1 per cent. ; Thames, 15.1 per cent.; Gisborne, 14.8 per cent.: Invercargill, 14.6 per cent.; Timaru, 9.2 per cent. Over the full period of the campaign, tho Wellington district had the best average, 23.8 per rent, of accounts used each week, followed by Christchurch with 23.4 per cent, and Auckland with 23.2 per cent. Auckland, with 1637 new accounts was an easy winner in fnis phase of the campaign.
