FASTER TRACK WORK

(By “Spectator.”)

The tracks at Awapunl have dried out well and presented excellent going this morning. The course proper was used for the fast work and the poles were about only 10ft out. Under the circumstances the times registered were not as fast as might have been expected. The two-year-olds Screen (Fagan) and Aspen were under restraint when running three furlongs in 44 3-sscc. Augment (Sellars) and Gladynev (Pearce) were paired over five furlongs in 1.5 3-5 and did it nicely. Over the same ground Tctratina (Andrews) registered 1.4 3-5, showing her customary brilliancy. Once round (a mile) was the lask allotted Don Quex and Stairway and they covered the distance in 1.50, the last three furlongs in 41scc —a pleasing effort. Alcthea (iM idwood) was not allowed to do her best when running three furlongs in 43sco, Pay Roll (Midwood) recording 42scc for the same distance. Greek Effort, Rama Iti and a companion could have improved on the 1.7 it took them to run five furlongs, Mary Scott, Donegal Bay and Solver doing the distance in 1.6 1-5. Beau Monde (Miss F. White) and Cartoonist jumped four hurdles well, and a fine display was given by Kanui tc Pai (Midwood) and Auburn Bad (Miss White). There was plenty of pace on and Auburn Lad went very well cohsidcring his lack of experience at this branch of the sport. The hurdle horseman J. Fagan has made a splendid recovery from the injuries he received when Hunting I,ore fell with him during a schooling bout and is back at work. He will be riding at the Otaki meeting. Glaciate, 9.8, in the Kapiti Hack Hurdles, should be included in the handicaps for the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s meeting.
