FEILDING NEWS

A programme of music was given by the Municipal Band on Sunday afternoon from the rotunda in Manchester Square.

In order to effect the change from the old building to the temporary : Post Office, members of the Post Office staff co-operated with the contractors during the week-end in the work of shifting furniture and equipment. Their action resulted in the change being made with a minimum of inconvenience to the public. On Saturday afternoon the staff was provided with afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs T. Walker at the hands of Miss M. Walker, a member of the staff. At a meeting of the committee of the W.W.S.A. it was reported that no advice as to when uniforms would be issued to members had been received from headquarters. Regarding the service rendered at an air station by members who assisted with supper arrangements in the canteen, several members were of the opinion that the Bulls W.W.S.A. should carry on the work because of the difficulty experienced in arranging transport for members from Feilding. Mrs R. E. Seddon stated that the Bulls members had to conduct a clubroom and canteen at Bulls, and headquarters had expressed a wish that the Peilding section continue its work at the station. Should members be unable to get cars, Mrs Seddon would undertake to arrange for their transport. Out of the proceeds from the military ball £3 had been donated towards the cost of a piano for one of the camps, a wedding present had been given to Lieutenant Dahl and Miss M. Higgle by way of a pair of solid silver serviette rings, while the balance of the surplus had been shared by the W.W.S.A., Territorial Association and the Spinsters' Club.

Robson, of the local railway staff,' has been promoted to goods clerk in charge of the goods department, which has been stepped up a grade. Mr J. H. Cowan, who has been in charge of the goods shed, is now transferred to the main office here, where he will deal with passenger traffic. The restrictions placed on rail travel have caused hardship in some instances, said Mr W. Moorman (stationmaster), in discussing the matter with the "Manawatu Standard", but the instructions had to be carried out and permits issued only for urgent travel. Trains passing through Feilding en route to the north were usually filled when they reached here, and this state of affairs indicated how necessary it was to reduce bookings to a minimum. Applications from stock dealers for trucks still cause some concern, and it was stated that it was most difficult to secure the services of drovers for long treks By road. The Basketball Association's competition this season resulted in a draw. High School A' and Old Girls sharing honours for the Dorccn Hunt Cup. Mrs L. Thurston (president of the association) made Ihe presentation on Saturday, which marked the conclusion of the season's activities. The winning teams will each hold the trophv for six months. Miss P. Graham thanked die referees for their services during the year.
