GERMAN EFFORTS SMASHED
SEVERE LOSS OF TANKS NO NEW GAINS AT STALINGRAD LONDON, Sept. 24. A tremendous new effort by the Germans to smash through to the centre of Stalingrad has been defeated by the defenders. The Germans with 200 tanks made 12 attempts to reach their objective, and the Russians were subjected to an intense artillery bombardment, while the. Luftwaffe roared overhead for hour after hour, bombing- the defenders’ positions.
The Prussian Guards threw hack the enemy, smashed 42 of his tanks, and took a heavy toll of the lorryborne infantry. North of the city the Russians continue their strong drive, and on the Volga Russian gunboats are rendering good service in transporting reinforcements across from the east bank and taking back Russian wound-
ed. Although the Germans have been rein forced in tho Mozclok <irea all their latest efforts to advance towards the Grozny oilfields lmvo failed. , On the Black Sea front, whero the Germans arc trying to reach the port of Tuapso, the Russians have repelled attneks and in some places have regained ground. In the Voronezh area three strong attacks by the Germans liavo been smashed.
