CITIZENS’ PROTEST
DEPUTATION TO MAYOR
Before tho announcement of State control of the mines, and when fears of an acute shortage of coal first arose, tbe following telegram was sent bv the Mayor (Air A. E. Alansford) to the Acting-Prime Aimister (Air Fraser not having then returned to the Dominion) :—“A deputation of citizens has requested me to convey to you their strong protest against tho action of the miners at Huntly in continuing the strike in view of the Dominion’s critical condition, such action being a treacherous betrayal of the men . overseas and m camp, as well as of the women and children. The Government is requested to take the strongest action.” The following reply was received from the Acting-Prime Minister: “I wqjild remind you that the men concerned in the AVaikato strike are bofore the Court to-day and, consequently, the matter is sub judice at tho moment. In the meantime, the whole subject is receiving the constant attention of the Government. AVc expect the full co-operation of all the people in New Zealand in the endeavour to ensure the resumption of production.”
