PATRICTIC FUNDS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Mr Mansford’s letter the other day, I think, can best be described as “Confounded worse confounded.” What does Mr Mansford really mean? Bor instance: If I gave £IOO to some patriotic fund, would I be allowed to deduct this amount from my income tax as an exemption, and would I also be able to reduco my contribution to social security along the same lines? Or (2) would I have to pay extra incomo tax and social security tax on the £100? I think the solution will bo found to bo that there are some really stupid people who imagine that, if they gave £IOO to some patriotic fund, they would have to pay extra taxation by so doing. Such an assumption is really too stupid for words. It is only where people give over £SOO p.a. away that they would have to pay gift duty tax. However. I await Mr Mansford’s reply.—l am, etc., CITIZEN.
