THE FRENCH FLEET
(1.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 24. Reports from France indicate the failure of the Vichy drive to recruit 35,000 sailors to replace tho obstinately pro-democratic crews at present aboard the anchored fleet, says the Christian Science Monitor’s Washington correspondent. Nevertheless, the French Cabinet, it is believed, opposes turning over the fleet to the Germans, although German press t o is still capable of forcing Cabinet’s hand. The Laval administration now realises that a surrendered fleet would immediately become a target for the Allies’ sea and air power. Furthermore, the fleet lias taken on a new significance because of the reduction of the Italian navy’s strength. Many Frenchmen still believe that a day of reckoning with Italy is coming,
