U.S. "SIXTH COLUMN"
WASHINGTON, March 25. At President Roosevelt's Tress conference reporters alluded to a speech by Mr Richard Patterson, War havings Director, in New York, in which he° asserted that "sixth columnists were active. Mr Roosevelt replied that Mr Patterson had "a pretty good line that people, wittingly or unwittingly were carrying out work designed by the Fifth Column." 'there were a lot oi sixth columnists in the bjyiteci States, and there would be no Juftu Column if there were no Sixth Column to distribute the propaganda. Asked' to elaborate how this Sixth Column worked, Mr Roosevelt said he preferred to remain silent, since no would have to include quite a number of people in the room with him. When asked whether writing and conversation were methods used bv the Sixth Column in spreading Fifth Column propaganda, he hinted that these were employed, along with rumours, cocktail parties, and tea-fights.
