Air D. S. Ross (Te Puke) has been elected Dominion president of the Federation of A’oung Farmers’ Clubs. Prolessor (i. S. Peren (principal of Alasis one of its patrons. Air AYiIJ Appleton lias been selected as the National Party candidate for Wellington Central to stand against the Prime Alinister (Air Fraser). Air Appleton contested the scat at the last general election against Air Fraser. Air AY. Gilbert has been appointed secretary of the Wellington Bowling Centre in succession to the late Air A. F. Spiller. Air Gilbert, who has retired from the Public Service, is a. bowler of considerable experience and has also given much service on the administrative side of the game. He is a past- president of the Wellington Centre. Official advice lias been received by Air Headquarters, AVellington. that the Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to Pilot-Officer Arthur Ashworth who was born in Gisborne in 1920 and educated at the Alexandra District High School. He was employed in the aerodrome services of the Public Works Department prior to his selection for a short-service commission.

The death of Sergeant-Major H. L. Frank occurred suddenly at his home in Nelson on Sunday last. He was recently awarded the M.8.E., and had been associated with the New Zealand Armed Services for -12 years, being a member of the Permanent Forces for the past 29 years as staff sergeantmajor. Sergeant-Major Frank was awarded both the British and New Zealand Meritorious Service Medals for his services. He also held the King’s Jubilee Medal and the Long and Efficient Service Medal. He was prominent in rifle shooting for many years. Lieutenant-Colonel William Henry Blinman Bull, who has been reported missing, is the elder son of Mrs 11. J. Bull, of Napier; bis father died a few weeks ago. Colonel Bidl was educated at the Napier Boys’ High School and later at the Otago Medical School, where lie qualified in medicine. Later he went to the Old Country, gaining his F.ILC.S. degree at Edinburgh. Some time after his return to New Zealand he went back to Great Britain. where he carried out further medical research. For some years he was in practice in Wellington. Colonel Bull served through Greece with a New Zealand ambulance unit, going afterwards to Crete, from where In' has been reported missing. His wife resides at l’araparammi, and they have four children.

Brigadier Edward ’Put-tick, who.has been appointed Chief of the General Staff of the New Zealand Defence Forces in succession to Major-General Sir John I>uigan, was born at Timaru .11 years ago and educated at the Waitaki Boys’ High'School. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in ,1911 and was a captain in the Samoan expedition in 1914. Subsequently he went overseas and saw service as k a lieuten-ant-colonel commanding the 3rd and 4th battalions of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, during which time he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and was twice mentioned in dispatches. In 1919 Brigadier Puttick was appointed Assistant-Quartermas-ter-Gencral at Army Headquarters, and in the following year was selected to command a force sent to Fiji to deal with Indian rioters. In 1932 lie was made general staff officer in the Southern Command, and in 1934' received the appointment of QuartermasterGeneral. Brigadier Puttick went overseas in 193 G. and broadened his knowledge of military affairs by being attached to the War Office and attending the Imperial Defence College in London. On bis return to New Zealand in 1938 he was again appointed quar-termaster-General and was made second military member of the Army Board. He has also held the position of officer commanding the Central Military District. He lias, since won renown for his leadership in the present hostilities.
