The death has occurred of Sir Enisley Carr, who had been the chairman and editor of the News of the World for about 50 years. He was aged 74. Sir 'Rabindranath Tagore. Ilie distinguished Indian poet, writer, and composer, who is aged 80, underwent an operation at Calcutta on Wednesday morning.

The friends of Mr W. Mouldey will regret to learn that he lias been obi,god to re-enter hospital for treatment similar to that which he has previously received.

The appointment of Air \Y. F. L. Ward as acting-Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for a further three months from September 1 has licen gazetted. The death has occurred of a pioneer settler, of Carterton, Mr Michael .Joseph Groukowski, at. the age of 101 years. Mr Groukowski was horn in Poland on October 20. 18-10, and came to New Zealand in 1882.

Chatham, with the advice that his soil, Ordinary-Seaman John A hired Cole, aged 25, is missing oil war service and presumed killed. Born in Auckland. Ordinary Seaman Cole was educated at the Timaru Boys’ High School and Canterbury College. He was later appointed assistant lecturer in chemistry at. Otago University and last year won the Michael Hiatt Baker scholarship. He left New Zealand under scheme B and was to have sat for a commission this month.
